Is Adding the Positive Sabotaging Your Results with Emotional Freedom Technique
Whether the person is an EFT Practitioner or someone using Emotional Freedom Technique on their own, people definitely want to use positive statements in EFT.
But did you know that adding the positive too soon can undermine your results? It is like pouring room temperature, flat Pellegrino on a hot, summer day.... there is no punch or 'omph!' to it.
Here are the 3 main reasons why adding positive statements can fall flat during EFT:
1. The negative charge must be reduced and verbalized for positive statements to be effective and stick.
An analogy would be to imagine a two-year-old child having a temper tantrum and the parent expects him to completely stop expressing his emotions, stand up, walk to the dinner table and eat in a perfectly calm, controlled manner. It's asking too much, too soon. The little one must get a good deal of the agitation out of his system before you introduce a more positive option to him or her, which she or he will be ready to consider and then accept.
Adults are no different. We need to express and release the bulk of the negative charge, no matter what the specific issue, habit, challenge or memory we are working on.
2. Your client will not felt heard or understood
If you add the positive too soon when your client is not ready to incorporate or accept it, they will feel that you are not listening or 'getting' them or their challenges. They will begin to feel resistance to the process and to you as their practitioner! It is crucial that you build rapport with your client. And one of the strongest rapport building skills in EFT is being a highly tuned listener and knowing the right time to incorporate the positive.
3. If you are treating yourself with EFT, the part that is 'negative' will not feel heard...
and therefore will 'act out' in other ways. As I have shared many times before we have different aspects to ourselves and different voices that go along with those aspects. For example, the dutiful mother that gives of herself completely to her family, might have a resentful part that wants to say, 'Hey! What about me? I deserve to be pampered, time to myself, etc.' If this resentful or frustrated part is stifled or suppressed, or sort-of-heard, it will act out it's resentment in others ways... guaranteed!
But, at the ideal time positive statements (I call them 'Empowerment Statements')
* Take a person from feeling helpless to powerful about their problem or situation
* Shift a client's focus from limitation to possibilities and a new perspective that was previously unseen
* Move the person from being stuck to new and longer lasting positive thoughts, feelings and behaviors * Feel great for the Practitioner and the client!
So how to make sure your positive statements don't fall flat and deliver the impact you are wanting with the tapping?
Here are three pointers:
1. Make sure the negative has been sufficiently voiced and reduced
2. Test, test, test. After your rounds of EFT go back and ask the client (or yourself) the SUDS rating again.
3. Ask your clients. I tell my clients at the first session, "If at any time I say a phrase or word that doesn't quite match or that you feel can be stated in a different way that would be describe your feeling... feel free to interrupt me!"
Developing the skills to know when to add Empowerment Statements is well worth the practice and training to do so.
